This Fall/Winter we will be presenting our first Winter Speaker Series.

These presentations will be held at the Estes Park Recreation Center at 660 Community Drive in Estes Park.

Each presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last about an hour.

Our director Scott Rashid will be presenting a different program each week.

Dates and Subjects of the Presentations

24 January Great Horned Owls 6:30 p.m. This is the largest and most common owl in the valley. During this program you will find out how these large birds survive year-round by feeding on almost every animal, bird, and reptile in the area. How they begin nesting in the winter and are hardy enough to raise a family in the harsh environments they choose.

31 January Owls of Northern Colorado 6:30 p.m. This presentation will cover the 11 species of owls that can be found in Northern Colorado. Topics discussed will include courtship, nesting, egg laying, feeding and much more of each species.

14 February What birds do in Winter 6:30 p.m. Have you ever wondered what birds do to survive the cold winter months? Here is your chance to find out. During this program you will learn how our avian friends survive the winter.

21 February Small Mountain Owls 6:30 p.m. Small Mountain Owls is a wonderful presentation that covers four small owls that live in the area. The Northern Pygmy-Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Flammulated Owl, and the Boreal Owl as well as the work that Scott and members of CARRI have been doing to learn about these birds.

28 February Discerning Species 6:30 p.m. Have you ever seen a bird and wondered what species it was? Here is your chance to learn how to tell one bird from another.

American Kestrels This will cover the work that CARRI is doing to increase the numbers of these birds in Colorado. IYou will also learn where these smallest North American Falcons nest, what they feed upon, how many eggs are laid and more.

Owls of the Estes Valley How many species or owls can be seen in the Estes Valley? There are 6 and during this presentation you will see all of them and learn all about how they live, hunt, feed, and raise their families.

Barn Owls Members of CARRI have been studying these magnificent birds since 2011. We have more than 30 nest boxes for these birds in Colorado and 10 near Austin Texas. We have cameras on these birds that enables us to learn everything about these owls including how they nest, feed their young how they find our nest boxes and more.

Hummingbirds (Jewels of the Summer) Have you ever wondered how these tiniest of birds migrate north from Mexico to live in the mountains? Or how they feed, nest and raise their families? Here is your chance to find out.

Bluebirds of Estes Did you know that bluebirds are not actually blue? During Bluebirds of Estes you will learn about this fact and many others about the three species of bluebirds that live in North America.
